Our Bookish New Years Resolutions
Our Bookish New Years Resolutions Into goals, checklists, monitoring your attempts at self-improvement, and tracking progress toward an achievement? This post is for you. Here are a bunch of Rioters revealing what were resolving to do with our reading lives in 2015. Are you setting any reading or reading-related goals this year? Rebecca Joines Schinsky My reading goals always tend to revolve around adding something to the mix. In 2014, I focused on reading more books by people of color, and Ill continue that this year. My new goal is to read more books in translation and more books from non-American writers. Maya Payne Smart When I find a book I love, Iâm going to be more proactive about recommending it to others. Iâm going to write about it on my blog and Book Riot, tout it on social media, buy copies for friends, shout about it from rooftops and such. Nikki Steele I want to continue being thoughtful about my books in 2015read what I want to read when I want to read it and be willing to DNF. In 2014, I cut down the amount of books I read overall substantially, BUT so many more of them were winners this year that Iâm not upset about the lower number. In line with being more thoughtful, Iâm also going to go for more diversity in my reading. This means more books by authors of color and reading other genres more widely (Iâm looking at you comics and nonfiction!). Kelly Jensen I started reading with intention a couple of years ago, and I plan on continuing that. That means I donât let publication dates dictate what I read, and if I find myself in a slump, I live with it and let it linger as long as it needs to. One of my reading with intention goals a couple of years ago was to dedicate October to reading more horror, which I like a lot but tend to skip over more than I want to. I want to continue that in the new year, and Iâd like to dedicate a month to consciously reading backlist and classic titles I havenât read. That doesnât mean only reading those; it means making a better effort to pick those up alongside other titles. Rachel Cordasco Iâm going to continue reading more fiction in translation, and attempt to work through my teetering TBR pile! Amanda Nelson My resolutions usually have to do with reading more from my TBR, but Ive learned that thats just never going to happen, so Im ditching that this year. In 2015, Im going to up my number of books authored by people of color, and my number of books authored by people who arent from the U.S. or U.K., which is where the overwhelming majority of books Ive read in the past come from. Derek Attig I want to refuse to feel bad about what I reador, more typically, what I donât end up reading. During seven years in grad school (I finally graduated in 2014), I made an artform out of feeling bad about not reading as much as I could. Usually that meant historical monographs and articles, but I increasingly found that guilt migrating to my leisure reading. Iâd think to myself things like: âYou only read three novels this month? You gave up at page 20 of that weird, difficult, unpleasant next-big-thing book? You donât read enough poetry!â Not exactly a way to make reading fun or, really, productive. So for 2015, I say NOPE to all of that. Rachel Manwill I want to read more short fiction and nonfiction in 2015. I read a couple of short story and essay collections in 2014 and they all really reminded me how powerful and wonderful a shorter form can be. So short stories, novellas, essays even comic book trades are going to have a more prominent place in my 2015 reading. Liberty Hardy My goals for 2015 are the same as last year: read as much as I can, whenever and wherever possible! This was a spectacular year for books, and I think 2015 is going to be equally as awesome. Next year Iâd like to read more backlist, and more indie press offerings. And the whole Sherlock Holmes canon. And more nonfiction. And at least fifty books by authors of color. And I want to re-read all of Kurt Vonnegutâs novels, and read every Muriel Spark novel, because Iâve only read four of her books and she is a goddess. Iâve also signed up for the Book Riot Read Harder reading challenge, and I am so excited to tackle 2015 with a fresh reading spreadsheet! Jesse Doogan This year I want to be more intentional about managing my library, so to speak. I tend to spend over-buy at library sales and places like Half-Price Books, but I end up coming home with books Ill never read. Then I dont buy the books I know I will want to reread or loan out. So, this year, starting with a grand cleaning out and organizing of the shelves, Im going to start buying the books I want, and try to stop binge-buying the books I dont want. Rita Meade I resolve to diversify my reading list. I resolve to not put a library book on hold until I finish the one Im reading. For that matter, I resolve to pay attention to my library due dates so I dont have an ebook disappear in the middle of reading it. I resolve not to read reviews before I read a book so that I can read it fresh and have my own perceptions. I resolve to let go of DNF-guilt, genre-guilt, and and other kind of book guilt in existence. Brand Bailey Im aiming to only read lady authors and authors of color. Say what you want about everything in moderation, this is my personal challenge to myself and I have my reasons. And the white males will still be there with their books in 2016! (The only exception clause Ive given myself is if Jasper Fforde somehow magically drops a Shades of Grey sequel on us in 2015 *cough* hint *cough*). Im also itching to read and discuss way more feminist literature. Basically Im resolving to be the woman Internet trolls hate this year. Preeti Chhibber I resolve to read more diverse books, of course. Thats a given. I resolve to not stress about finishing a book if I dont like it. I resolve to not fall into reading holes and read the same type of book over and over (it never ends well). And this is it. This is the year that Im going to be good about tracking my reading. I made it through October in 2014, this year Ill make it all the way. Im also definitely going to find a great way to track my comics. I swear. 2015 reading, I will organize the heck out of you! Kristina Pino Iâm feeling pretty ambitious with my reading goals this year. First off, Iâm participating in the Book Riot 2015 Read Harder Challenge. Besides that, I plan on upping my ethnic diversity reading, including books in translation. And finally, I want to read 5 books in Spanish. Books that are originally in Spanish, not translated from English or whatever. It struck me that for being a native speaker⦠I digest practically zero media in the language. So fixing! Have recommendations? Let me have âem. Jessi Lewis I really want to take advantage of books in physical format, because while I have a digital reader, I know that it canât do everything. For example, why am I not going to the library? And why am I not lending out my smelling good, real-life books? Finally, Iâve been really enjoying dystopian work, so itâs time to break down my genre barriers a bit. I want to tackle Sci Fi and Horror in a way I hadnât really let myself before for reasons Iâm unaware of. Good sci fi, well written sci fi horror that leaves me awake at night. I do worry about where I should start, so send me your recommendations pleeeease! Alison Peters First, I am going to take my own advice and donate as many books as possible to good causes, and then tackle my most enticing TBR piles. I would really love if I can speak about/recommend each book in my own personal library, and not have a bunch sitting around just to be pretty. And Iâd like to refrain from re-reads as much as possible (except in cases of extreme need!) and focus on reading new stuff particularly nonfiction, which Iâve gotten away from recently. Tasha Brandstatter Iâd like to read different genres this yearâ"more science fiction and fantasy, graphic novels, young adult, etc. I used to read a lot of manga and fantasy, but Iâve fallen way behind on that. Iâd like to find a genre that I can REALLY dig into and become totally obsessed with. I also pick at least one hefty classic to read every year, but I havenât gotten around to that yet. Any suggestions? Maybe this will be the year I finally read Lord of the Rings (haaa kidding). Dana Staves Unflinching is a word I often hear used, to describe both writers and readers, that signifies bravery, nerve, and in my estimation, strength. Itâs a word I would never use to describe myself, in my writing or reading life. I often avoid books that I deem scary or stressful, ones that I know will end with me scrunched into a tight little ball of worry and sadness and anger and fear. But the thing is, literature pushes. It asks us to consider things things that are beautiful and happy, sure, but as often (sometimes more so) things that are painful, scary, uncomfortable. And I want to try and face that with a bit more bravery this year. I want to set my intention toward being unflinching. Your turn, reader friends! What are you hoping to put on the books (see what I did there) in 2015? ____________________ Wear your love of banned books on your sleeve. Er, feet. And also your arm, with that rad tote. Be Real What is REAL - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1535 Downloads: 2 Date added: 2017/09/22 Category Advertising Essay Type Argumentative essay Did you like this example? ââ¬Å"What is REAL? â⬠asked the Rabbit one dayâ⬠¦ Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and stick out like a handle? â⬠In the childrenââ¬â¢s book, The Velveteen Rabbit, by Margery Williams, two toys talk within a nursery about what it means to be Real. As I listened to the reading, I realized that I can apply the discussed qualifications for Real into my life, and as I did so I began to recognize just how Real I may be. After reading the book to the class my teacher issued an assignment, a five page essay on ââ¬Å"What does it mean to be real? I immediately thought ââ¬Å"With such a harsh case of senioritus? Impossible! Real? It means to walk around with air in your lungs, moveable joints and a ticking heart. â⬠A few minutes later I woke up a bit more and evaluated the question further. It took me several weeks, many I-Pod searches, a time-consuming assessment of my life and intense movie watching, but I do believe that I have the key tha t will uncover Realââ¬â¢s meaning in every sense. What does it mean to be real? According to Websterââ¬â¢s Dictionary real is defined as ââ¬Å"physically existing or not artificialâ⬠. As the great French philosopher Rene Descartes said ââ¬Å"I think therefore I amâ⬠, I say ââ¬Å"If I am then I exist and if I exist, then I am physically hereâ⬠. Now establishing the fact that I am real in the physical sense, the question, ââ¬Å"Am I artificial? â⬠develops. This question is a tricky one with regard to the concept that teenagers do not act on our own sense of morals, but rather on the desire to satisfy those whose affection we crave, and I am no exception. Taking all this into account I am artificial, however, if this is the manner in which the rest of my contemporaries behave then I am only as real as my age. So far through my life I have operated with appendages in my eyes, with others steering my vision of reality, whether they are my parents, fri ends, peers or media and I realize that one element in being real is to seize control of what and how I see and understand the world. To do so, I must close my eyes after a view and ponder, for myself, what I saw and how it struck me because otherwise I would only be allowing others to cause a collision. Real isnt how you are made, said the Skin Horse. Its a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real (Williams 5). After reading and reflecting on how this sentence might pertain to my life, I came to the conclusion that I am not yet Real. This sentence says that being Real is being truly loved by someone, not just ââ¬Å"playingâ⬠, but truly being cared about; I donââ¬â¢t see myself as sincerely being loved by anyone except for my Dad and our relationship is fairly new, even though I know he has loved me since before I was born. Love must be combined with an extraordinary bond in order to make one Real, a bond that will release one from all insecurities and filter the world in a different and more positive light. As for the friends that I have accumulated over the years, I do not see myself as being of any immense significance to their lives, all we did was play and have fun. What I mean to say is, if I were to suddenly disappear, more likely than not my friends would mourn my dissolution for a brief while, but only the person who I truly mattered to will be the one whose life would need rearranging. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things dont matter at all, because once you are Real you cant be ugly, except to people who dont understand (Williams 5). Does it hurt? asked the Rabbit. Sometimes, said the Skin Horseâ⬠¦ When you are Real you dont mind being hurt (Williams 5). To be within reach of becoming Real, a person must not shelter herself from lifeââ¬â¢s events, whether good or bad, because with all good and no bad, how is the good ever to be valued? When in the process of becoming real, a person is taken from the secure confinements of her cupboard and takes the risks and the experiences that go along with becoming Real. This may cause hurt and damage to oneââ¬â¢s self, but it takes the simplicity away from her fur, tatters it a bit, but all the while it is what gives her appearance character, setting her aside from all the other velveteen rabbits that shared all the same aspects. I have never truly strayed from my cupboard and out of the nursery for fear of damaging my ââ¬Å"furâ⬠, I have taken risks and been hurt, but always within the custody of my shelf. It doesnt happen all at once, said the Skin Horse. You become. It takes a long time. Thats why it doesnt happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully keptâ⬠(Williams 5). Becoming R eal is a long process that requires a life time of experiences that will subject me to Real pain, and Real love, not only from or for another person, but also from and for myself. The boy in the story did not make the rabbit Real, he only contributed by loving and showing him lifeââ¬â¢s beauties such as love and friendship. The rabbit in fact made himself Real by accepting himself. I was birthed by a fifteen year old girl who was totally unprepared to be a mother and was adopted by my grandmother and step-grandfather, whom I called mom and dad. But after middle school, when I was more able to recognize my surroundings along with other events that occurred with my family along with the quarrel within myself, I began to feel as if I do not belong and have no Real family, causing me to feel insignificant. It felt wrong to request for things from my grandparents since I am not truly their child, not to mention they already raised their own kids and still have to pay for my educ ation and cost of living; I could not ask from my mother because she has her own kid who also posses needs and seeing as how I have never played the role of her daughter, although she and I occasionally try, it is not my place. Due to these feelings of displacement Iââ¬â¢ve always felt incapable of being loved by more than my daddy and therefore I try to find many little substitutions to fill the void, whether they be friends, crushes or even family. I began to develop the impression that I was a slip-up and not meant to be here or to be loved. Iââ¬â¢ve analyzed myself and my personality, along with other peopleââ¬â¢s criticisms, and have found that I desperately crave attention, usually in heaps from one person at a time. I constantly want to feel as though someone cares and I desire that at least one person would want to be around me without growing tired. However, none of these quick fix relations ever last very long and something always happens to make me feel trivia l. Without the approval of others, I am never able to approve myself my question is always ââ¬Å"How can I like myself if others donââ¬â¢t even like me? What is wrong with me? â⬠I cannot predict when I will become Real. It may happen in a few years, or in the closing stages of my life if ever at all. Needless to say this paragraph knocks me out of the running to become Real. There are no magical nursery fairies or wise old rocking horses to transform a human being into Real. An individual must undergo selflessness, acceptance, experience and a clear perception of the world (all attributes of Christ). Perhaps Real is another form of perfection. With this in mind, I ask, has anyone ever been Real? With all the ingredients necessary to be Real it is practically impossible to achieve it until made divine, which must be achieved through Real actions. I cannot become Real simply from experiences and learning from them or even adding all the ingredients together, because ev en after being subject to all these phases, I will continually be subject to more until my final breath. The trials given here on earth are sent to test us on how well we handle our affairs, if we pass all the courses until deaths touch, we are proved worthy and made into Real. Works Cited Real. The Nature And Existence Of God - 1364 Words
The existence of suffering in the world provides a case against the existence of God as the problem of evil. It seems that the God of classical theism is incompatible with the reality of the world around us; could such an all-loving, all-powerful and all-knowing God exists in conjunction with instances of immense and seemingly pointless suffering? It does seem unlikely that such a God exists alongside evil. However, it is questionable whether this is a proof that God does not exist. The problem of evil which forms as; ââ¬Ëis God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?ââ¬â¢ (Lactanitus). Epicurus here challenges the properties we associate with God, suggesting that those properties do not add up to reality and be consistent with perceived belief about the nature and existence of God. We can form the problem into an inconsistent triad (J.L Mackie, 212) which runs that God is omnipotent, omnibenevolent and evil exists. He postulates that ââ¬Å"no valid solution of the problem which does not modify at least one of the constituent propositionsâ⬠, positing that is would be impossible to remove one of the characteristics of God without moving the image of God so far away from our traditional understanding that it becomes unrecognisable and the problem still remains. Report Comair Flight Free Essays
My Summary Comair Flight 191, also marketed and know as Delta Connection Flight 5191, was scheduled to fly from Lexington, Kentucky, to Atlanta, Georgia, on the morning of August 27, 2006. Unfortunately the jet crashed while attempting to take off from Blue Grass Airport in Fayette County, Kentucky. There is a ton of information on this accident and numerous ââ¬Å"mistakesâ⬠that possibly led to it but it seems that the majority of the blame was put on the captain. We will write a custom essay sample on Report: Comair Flight or any similar topic only for you Order Now I find this accident had multiple people at fault, in that if any one person was able to do their job professionally and accurately, this accident would not of happened and those people would still be alive today. The Event The aircraft was assigned by the tower to the airportââ¬â¢s Runway 22 for the takeoff, but used Runway 26 instead. Runway 26 was too short for a safe takeoff which was typically used for general aviation, causing the aircraft to overrun the end of the runway before it could become airborne. It crashed just past the end of the runway, killing all 47 passengers and two of the three crew. The first officer was the only survivor and not the pilot in command but was flying at the time of the accident. Matthew Kawamura 06/15/2013 Air Trans 1010 SM Errors Leading Some of these errors are of skill based, judgment and or perception based but some are a combination. 1. The flight crew initially boarded the wrong aircraft. A Comair ramp agent noticed that the accident flight crew had boarded the wrong airplane and started its auxiliary power unit. Another company ramp agent notified the flight crewmembers that they had boarded the wrong airplane. The flight crew then shut down the APU and proceeded to the correct airplane. I donââ¬â¢t know if this is a common mistake but shows me how easy the day can start off wrong. Thatââ¬â¢s 3 professional people that all walked on the wrong plane and did not notice. Should this have set off some alarms that something was not right? My question has no answers but am sure it may have caused them to be behind schedule and then add some sort of stress. 2. The LEX air traffic control tower was staffed with one controller at the time of the accident airplaneââ¬â¢s preflight activities, taxi, and attempted takeoff. The controller was responsible for all tower and radar positions. I believe that if the tower did not check on the radar position and follow through on watching the aircraft. He was to make sure the aircraft was on the correct runway. According to the report, the tower was to be manned with two people. If this was enforced, maybe the controller would not have been so over worked and could have caught the mistake. I think also that the controller had assumptions that this crew knew what was going on and didnââ¬â¢t need to be babysat. There had not been any issues with any other aircraft getting on the wrong runway that we know of. 3. The first officer began the takeoff briefing, which is part of the before starting engines checklist. During the briefing, he had confusion as to what runway to use and stated, ââ¬Å"he said what runwayâ⬠¦ two four,â⬠to which the captain replied, ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s two two. â⬠The first officer continued the briefing, which included three additional references to runway 22. This would lead one to believe that there was no more confusion about what runway to use and a second check could have saved them. 4. During the brief, the first officer also noted that the runway end identifier lights were out and commented, ââ¬Å"came in the other night it was like â⬠¦ lights are out all over the place. â⬠This reflects the care of the airport fac ilities. Sounds like a simple task to replace lights but we have no answers to why this is allowed to go on. Having had been to this airport other times, I can see no concern for it as long as you are sure. Just because other planes are doing it doesnââ¬â¢t make it safe. I feel a lot of stuff is follow the leader or a check list mindlessly because thatââ¬â¢s how it is and is the same result at the endâ⬠¦ Everything the same and ok. This brings in carelessness. Matthew Kawamura 06/15/2013 Air Trans 1010 SM Violations 1. During the start engines checklist, some shady stuff was going on. The captain pointed out that the before starting engines checklist had already been completed, and the first officer questioned, ââ¬Å"We didâ⬠? The irst officer seems to be a little behind the curve, the captain is going to fast for him through the checks or just wanted to skipped it completely. Being only a first officer, who is going to argue and is just relying on the captainââ¬â¢s word or not doing checks properly. This also may be standard cheating around the industry. Who will blow the whistle? 2. The flight crew engaged in conversation that was not pertinent to the operation of the flight. This would be violating the sterile cockpit rules during critical moments. Matthew Kawamura 06/15/2013 Air Trans 1010 SM Maybe a sterile cockpit could of helped? Three people messing around sounds like fun but seem to forget about the other people on board who depend on them to be professional. Environmental The crew, tower, weather and plane all seemed to be good to go from the reports. The runway had lighting issues and the charts had some issues. 1. Runway 4/22 had high intensity runway lights that worked and also had centerline lights and runway end identifier lights, but they were out of service at the time of the accident because of a construction project. If more care would of been put in place to how this affects the pilots, and listened to pilot complaints this should not of been an issue. 2. The charts showed the taxiway configuration at the completion of the construction project that was not completed. I couldnââ¬â¢t figure out what all the before and after charts meant, but the bottom line is that the charts in use were out of date and or didnââ¬â¢t show proper information which could have caused more confusion for the crew. Supervision 1. The captain began a discussion with the first officer about which of them should be the flying pilot to ATL. The captain offered the flight to the first officer, and the first officer accepted. Matthew Kawamura 06/15/2013 Air Trans 1010 SM The captain delegated to the first officer and then seemed to rush through the check list and the first officer seemed to not be quite on the ball. The first officer let the captain take control of the check list, this in turn led to inadequate supervision and failure to correct. Organizational influence For the pilots, they seemed to be way relaxed not worried about what was going on around them. This was just another flight even though there was a lot around them going wrong to include the lights and short briefs. Seems that there is no checks to see how people work when no one is watching. For the tower, He seemed relaxed at his job also. He did some presuming and thought he didnââ¬â¢t have to babysit professionals. He saw the Comair airplane make a turn toward what he presumed to be runway 22, which was the last time he observed the airplane. The controller stated that, after he saw the airplane make this turn, he turned away and faced the tower cabââ¬â¢s center console so that he could begin the traffic count. Verbal guidance from the FAAââ¬â¢s vice president of terminal services, stated that facilities with radar and tower responsibilities were to be staffed with two controllers on the midnight shift so that the functions could be split, although both controllers could be colocated in the tower. There seemed to be checks and the tower continued how they wanted. Sounds like there should have been two controllers on duty so this puts people higher in the chain of command at being relaxed and not needing to worry cause it wonââ¬â¢t happen to them. The Complete Chain IMO ( In my opinion) 1. I think the first link to the chain of events that led to this crash was when they boarded the wrong plane. This may have put them behind and then started the short cutting of briefs and procedures. Maybe it was just the beginning of their laziness and nothing cloud of have changed it. 2. The charts and lighting situation may have caused more confusion in the cockpit. 3. If the tower had two people, it may have helped out one of the controllers and allowed him the time to watch and make sure they were on the correct runway. The first two points being corrected still may not have prevented this accident but certainly the third would have prevented it unless they just didnââ¬â¢t listen. Solutions 1. Better taxi brief and follow. 2. Use check list and not shortcut. 3. Sterile cockpit. 4. Rest periods modified and day/night shift crews. 5. CRM training 6. Random safety checks 7. Fix lighting and make better 8. Look out the window for cues. Matthew Kawamura 06/15/2013 Air Trans 1010 SM NTSB determination ââ¬Å"The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the flight crewmembersââ¬â¢ failure to use available cues and aids to identify the airplaneââ¬â¢s location on the airport surface during taxi and their failure to cross?check and verify that the airplane was on the correct runway before takeoff. Contributing to the accident were the flight crewââ¬â¢s nonpertinent conversation during taxi, which resulted in a loss of positional awareness, and the Federal Aviation Administrationââ¬â¢s failure to require that all runway crossings be authorized only by specific air traffic control clearances. â⬠How to cite Report: Comair Flight, Papers

Organic Agriculture
Key Partners The key partners of the company include retailers (supermarkets), suppliers of farm inputs, and consultants. The reasons for collaborating with retailers include the following. First, it will enable the company to achieve economies of scale in distribution. Established retailers such as supermarkets have branches in all parts of the country, which will enable the company to reach a large number of customers at a low cost.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Organic Agriculture ââ¬â Business Model Canvas specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Second, the partnership will enable the company to acquire the customers of its partners.1 For instance, customers who purchase consumer goods in supermarkets are also likely to buy organic foodstuffs during their routine shopping activities. This will facilitate quick market penetration. Finally, the partnership will reduce the risk of overtrading.2 Since the company has limited funds, it will lack adequate working capital if it invests in establishing its own retail outlets in the first two years. This risk will be prevented by collaborating with independent distributors (retailers). Collaborating with consultants who have expertise and experience in organic agriculture will help in eliminating uncertainties when making production decisions. The consultants will assist the farm manager to select the best farming methods in order to achieve the desired production level and product quality. Developing long-term partnerships with suppliers will enable the company to benefit from reliable access to farm inputs. This will help in preventing interruption of the production calendar, which may occur due to limited availability of key inputs such as seeds. Key Suppliers The main suppliers of the business will include landowners, manufacturers of farm inputs, and the Municipality of Abu Dhabi. The business will have to establish long-term relati onships with landowners in order to access adequate land for its farming activities. The Municipality of Abu Dhabi will be the main supplier of water for irrigation. The municipality is a key supplier because access to water will determine the farmââ¬â¢s output level. The municipality has a high bargaining power since there are no substitute sources of water for farming in Abu Dhabi.Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? It will also endeavor to pay its water bills in time in order to avoid disconnections. The products of suppliers of farm inputs will determine the quality of the organic foodstuffs that will be produced by the company. Therefore, farm inputs will be purchased from suppliers who differentiate their products by using organic raw materials to manufacture key supplies such as pesticides and fertilizers. This strategy will enable the company to use the right farm inputs in order to obtain the best results.3 Key Resources from Partners The most important resources that will be obtained from partners include production/ farming technology, land, farm inputs, and distribution services. Effective farming technology is a major determinant of success in organic farming, especially, in Abu Dhabi where natural resources such as land and water are scarce. Thus, the company will collaborate with consultants and independent research institutions to acquire the best organic farming technologies. The company will only be able to achieve its production objectives if it can access fertile land in Abu Dhabi. However, access to land is likely to be a challenge in future due to the expected increase in urbanization and industrialization. As the demand for land increase, the cost of leasing or purchasing it will rise significantly. Thus, the company will focus on p urchasing land in the medium term to avoid the expected increase in lease fee in the long-term. Key Activities Performed by Partners Consultants will provide technical advice to the company concerning the farming methods that it should adopt to achieve its business objectives. This will include provision of services such as testing soil and water quality.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Organic Agriculture ââ¬â Business Model Canvas specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The consultants will also lead the companyââ¬â¢s research and development projects. They will conduct periodic research activities on behalf of the company to facilitate innovation. The outcome of the research activities will be used to improve the companyââ¬â¢s farming activities. The key responsibility of retailers will be to distribute the companyââ¬â¢s organic foodstuffs. This will involve selling the products directly to cus tomers. They will also collaborate with the companyââ¬â¢s sales team to conduct marketing activities such as merchandising. The retailers will collect valuable feedback from customers through their sales and marketing systems. The feedback will enable the company to understand customersââ¬â¢ tastes and preferences. Suppliers will provide the materials and equipment that will be needed to produce organic foodstuffs. These include seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, greenhouses, and irrigation equipment. The suppliers will be responsible for installing and maintaining key resources such as greenhouses and irrigation equipment to avoid failure. Figure 1 and 2 show the type of greenhouse and drip irrigation equipment that will be used for farming. The company will also collaborate with certain suppliers to produce differentiated farm inputs. For instance, it will collaborate with producers of seeds to develop seedlings that suit its quality standards and farming needs. Figure 1: Green house Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Figure 2: Irrigation equipment Key Activities Value Proposition The companyââ¬â¢s value proposition is to produce and sell high quality organic foodstuffs in Abu Dhabi and other parts of the UAE. Delivering this value proposition requires the following activities. To begin with, the company will be directly involved in organic farming. This will involve producing a variety of organic fruits and vegetables. In the long-term (the next ten years), the company will diversify its brand portfolio by processing and distributing fresh fruit juice. Sourcing and procurement of various supplies will be required to create the value proposition. The company will source the best seeds in order to produce organic foodstuffs with high nutritional value. Once the company begins to process fresh fruit juices, it will collaborate with other producers of organic foodstuffs to obtain adequate supply of fruits. This will help in scaling up production to cater for increased demand for fruit juices. Th e company will also establish training and capacity building programs to improve its employeesââ¬â¢ ability to focus on best practices in organic farming. The training programs will target the farm workers. Specifically, on-the-job training and off-the-job training programs will be provided to workers to improve their skills and knowledge in organic farming.4 In the long-term, the company will extend the training programs to its employees who will be involved in manufacturing fresh juices. In this case, the objective of the training programs will be to promote product and process innovation. Distribution Supermarkets will be the main distribution channel through which the companyââ¬â¢s products will be sold in the short-term. In the medium term, the company will establish its own retail outlets to supplement the sales from supermarkets. Distributing the products through these channels will require the following activities. The first activity will be to build a network of retai lers to distribute the products. The company will use selective distribution to reach its target customers. Selective distribution involves using several but not all outlets that are available in a given geographical area to reach customers.5 In this regard, the company will collaborate with retailers who are known for quality, affordability, and reliability to maintain a consistent brand image. The main advantage of using selective distribution is that it will enable the company to select the best performing retailers, thereby avoiding the risk of wasting scarce resources in developing non-performing distributors. Selective distribution is also appropriate because consumers of organic foodstuffs often shop around to find the best products from reliable retailers. Supply chain management is the second activity that will be required to distribute the products. The supply chain activities that will be performed are summarized in figure 3. Figure 3: Supply chain activities The first s upply chain activity will be to procure the best farm inputs from reputable suppliers. The next step will involve using the farm inputs to produce various organic fruits and vegetables. After harvesting, the fruits and vegetables will be transported to the companyââ¬â¢s warehouse where they will be cleaned and packaged according to retailersââ¬â¢ requirements. From the warehouse, the company will transport the products directly to retail outlets where they will be sold to customers. The company will focus on reducing the time required to transport the fruits and vegetables from the farm to the retailers to preserve their freshness and natural tastes. The company will maintain long-term relationships with members of the supply chain to ensure effective production and distribution of its products.6 Coordination of the supply chain activities will be done by the company using business-to-business e-commerce platforms. This will help in reducing the cost of managing the supply cha in. Customer Relationships The company will use the social media to build relationships with customers (consumers of organic food). Specifically, it will use Facebook, Google+, and Twitter to engage the customers in conversations about its products. The aim of the conversations will be to provide vital information to customers such as the stores where the products will be sold and the health benefits of consuming them. The company will also participate in events such as agricultural trade fairs and seminars to build strong relationships with consumers of organic foodstuffs. Revenue Streams The companyââ¬â¢s main source of revenue will be production and distribution of organic fruits and vegetables. The main activity that will be required in this revenue stream will be obtaining as many sales orders as possible from retailers. In order to secure large orders, the company will negotiate for adequate floor space in the retail outlets to boost sales. The company will also use its mar keting communication mix to promote sales through the retail channel. Specifically, it will use advertising, merchandising, and loyalty programs to motivate potential customers to purchase its products. As sales increase in the retail outlets, the company will receive large orders. This will improve the chances of achieving the revenue and profitability targets that have been set for the short and medium term. Key Resources Value Proposition The key resources that are required to deliver the companyââ¬â¢s value proposition include the following. First, adequate human resources will be required. Specifically, the company will require cheap and reliable supply of labor to produce organic foodstuffs. The farm workers will require adequate skills and knowledge on various farming activities such as planting and controlling pests in order to create value to the company. Generally, access to cheap labor will reduce the cost of production. The resulting cost savings will be used to suppo rt innovation initiatives to improve product quality. In addition, the savings will enable the company to sell its products at a competitive price in order to overcome competition. Second, financial resources will be required to deliver the desired value proposition. Organic agriculture is capital intensive because it is based on advanced farming technologies.7 For instance, the company will require adequate funds to install and run an effective irrigation system. It will also have to purchase and use greenhouses to protect the crops from adverse weather conditions such as very high temperatures and strong wind. Moreover, the company will have to finance research activities in order to produce crops whose qualities meet the expectations of consumers. In this regard, the company will raise capital from different sources to meet its cash requirements. In the short and medium-term, the company will depend on the capital contributed by its owners and retained earnings to finance its act ivities. It will also obtain credit from local commercial banks to supplement its internal sources of funds. In the long-term, the company will raise venture capital to finance expansion activities such as extending its product line and joining new markets. Third, the company will require intellectual capital to deliver its value proposition. Intellectual capital refers to the information and knowledge resources that can be employed to improve profits, acquire new clients, develop new products, and reduce operating costs. The knowledge and information that will be required to produce and market the companyââ¬â¢s products will be obtained from internal and external sources. The companyââ¬â¢s employees will be the main internal source of information and knowledge. The employeesââ¬â¢ expertise in organic farming will be leveraged through staff development and training programs. Consultants and independent research partners will be the main external sources of information and k nowledge. They will use their expertise and experience to advise the company on the best farming practices that it has to adopt to deliver its value proposition. Distribution Channels The main resources that will be required to distribute the products include employees with the right skill set in sales and marketing, as well as, physical assets such as delivery trucks and sales premises. Talented employees will be required to assist customers at the retail outlets to boost sales. In addition, the marketing team will require adequate knowledge of the market in order to develop the right marketing strategies. Although the company will hire employees with expertise in sales and marketing, it will also focus on developing talent internally to improve the effectiveness of its distribution system. Customer Relationships Market intelligence is the main resource that will be required to develop relationships with consumers of organic foodstuffs. The company will also need an effective custo mer relationship management (CRM) system to develop strong relationships with the retailers. Market intelligence refers to external data or information that shed light on market dynamics such as changes in customersââ¬â¢ tastes and preferences.8 Market intelligence will be obtained through marketing research, which will be conducted biannually. The results of the marketing research will help in building relationships with consumers by providing information that will facilitate product development. The company will use an online CRM system to improve its relationship with retailers. The system will capture vital information such as the types of products that the retailers prefer to stock, payment history, and the size of orders made by various retailers. This information will help in understanding the needs of the retailers. As a result, the company will be able to address the retailersââ¬â¢ needs in time in order to improve its relationship with them. Value Proposition The com panyââ¬â¢s value proposition will focus on three areas namely, risk reduction, affordability, and cost reduction. The company will help consumers to reduce the negative health effects of eating processed foods, inorganic vegetables, and genetically modified foodstuffs. Empirical studies indicate that these foodstuffs cause diseases such as cancer, obesity, and diabetes. In the UAE, the prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as obesity and diabetes is very high. The diseases account for nearly 20% of the deaths in the country every year.9 Scientists have proved that organic foodstuffs help in preventing diseases such as cancer, obesity, and diabetes. It is against this backdrop that the company will focus on producing organic foodstuffs with high nutritional value to enable the residents of the UAE to maintain healthy lifestyles. Figure 4 shows the organic vegetables (tomatoes) that will be produced. Figure 4: Organic tomatoes The company will also help consumers to eliminate the risk of eating substandard or contaminated foods. In order to achieve this objective, the company will endeavor to meet all the quality standards that have been set by Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority. It will also strive to meet international quality standards that are used in the global food industry. These include Global G.A.P certification, organic product certification, and ISO certification.10 Achieving these certifications means that the company will have to comply with high food quality standards. As a result, it will supply safe foodstuffs that consumers can trust. Affordability is one of the major factors that determine access to organic foodstuffs in the UAE. Organic foodstuffs are often expensive in the country due to high importation and production costs. The company will create value to customers by adopting low cost production technologies to reduce the prices of organic food in the UAE. In addition, the company will eliminate importation costs by producing organic fo od within the country. The resulting reduction in retail prices will enable many customers to afford organic foods. The company will also create value to retailers by reducing the costs that they would incur to source high quality organic foodstuffs. The cost of producing and delivering the products at the retailersââ¬â¢ premises will be borne by the company. Moreover, the retailers will not incur additional monthly costs since they will be using their existing employees and floor space to sell the products. The cost savings coupled with increased revenue will improve the retailersââ¬â¢ profits. Customersââ¬â¢ Problems The companyââ¬â¢s main objective will be to address consumersââ¬â¢ health needs. Apart from addressing this need through production of organic foods, the company will integrate the ââ¬Ëhealthy livingââ¬â¢ campaign in its marketing programs. One of the factors that explain the low consumption rate of organic foodstuffs is lack of adequate informati on concerning their health benefits.11 The company will bridge the knowledge gap by using public relation initiatives such as press release to educate the residents of the UAE on the importance of eating organic foods. The company will also collaborate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that promote healthy living to provide public education on the health benefits of organic foods. As the public becomes more informed, the consumption of organic food will increase. This will reduce the prevalence of lifestyle diseases while improving the companyââ¬â¢s revenues. Products The company targets three market segments. These include the working class, the affluent, and individuals who are already suffering from chronic lifestyle illnesses. The working class and individuals who are suffering from lifestyle diseases have similar needs. In particular, people who are working are interested in preventing the diseases that they are likely to acquire due to their sedentary lifestyles. S imilarly, those who have already acquired lifestyle diseases are interested in healthy living to prolong their lifespan.12 In this regard, the company will serve the two market segments by supplying organic fruits and vegetables with high nutritional value. The same products will be supplied in the affluent market segment where consumption of high quality organic foods is the norm. However, the affluent will benefit from additional services such as ability to make large purchases directly from the farm. In this case, the products will be delivered directly to the consumerââ¬â¢s premise. These personalized services will enable the company to charge premium prices in the affluent market segment to improve its profits. Customer Needs The company will satisfy the following needs in the market. In the consumer market, the company will address the customersââ¬â¢ need for newness and accessibility. The residents of the UAE need to break away from the tradition of eating imported inor ganic foods that are often contaminated and have low nutritional value. The company will enable consumers to access fresh in-season fruits and vegetables to meet their dietary needs. In the affluent market segment, supplying high quality fruits and vegetables will enable customers to express their social status. Specifically, the high product quality will create an aura of luxury, which the affluent need to maintain their social status.13 Customers who are working have little time to spend on shopping for their groceries. Thus, they need to purchase their groceries in convenient places to save time. The company will address this need by collaborating with retailers whose outlets are located in strategic places within the central business districts of urban areas. This will help customers to access the products easily. The company will also use retailersââ¬â¢ online sales platforms to sell its products. Online shopping solutions will enable busy customers to purchase the organic f ruits and vegetables without visiting physical stores. The retailersââ¬â¢ main need is to access reliable supply of high quality organic foods. In order to address this need, the company will employ big data analytics to study consumersââ¬â¢ purchasing behavior. This strategy will enable the company to predict the types and quality of products that customers are likely to purchase in specific geographical areas. A clear understanding of purchasing patterns will help in ensuring effective capacity planning. As a result, the company will be able to supply adequate products to satisfy retailersââ¬â¢ sales needs. Generally, a reliable supply will enable retailers to retain their customers and to improve their revenues. Customer Relationships Expected Relationships Consumers of organic foods expect personal assistance within the retail stores. Customers often need adequate product information before making a purchase decision. For instance, new customers would want to access inf ormation on issues such as the productsââ¬â¢ origin, their quality, and their prices. Customers normally expect to find this information from sales personnel within the supermarkets. In addition, customers need assistance with purchasing activities such as weighing the fruits and vegetables or selecting the right products. Old customers and expats who are not able to understand Arabic are likely to seek assistance from sales personnel who can speak in English. By contrast, young and well-informed customers expect self-service in supermarkets. They expect the retailer to display a wide variety of products on the shelves so that they can make appropriate choices. Retailers, on the other hand, expect automated services. They expect to maintain their relationship with the company using e-commerce business-to-business platforms. This will enable them to access automatic services such as placing orders, making inquiries about product availability, and making their payments. Retailers p refer e-commerce systems because they reduce operating cost and improve communication among trading partners. Retailers also expect to maintain a close relationship with a dedicated personal assistance. They expect the company to assign one contact person who will be responsible for handling their inquiries and managing their accounts. Established Relationships The company has made provisions for both self-service and personal assistance to improve its relationship with the consumers. The sales area will have at least two sales associates to assist the customers with the purchase process. The associates will provide all the information that customers need to make purchase decisions. They will also assist with activities such as product selection. The company will also collaborate with the retailers to design the sales floor in a manner that promotes self-service. This will include creating enough space between shelves to facilitate movement. The companyââ¬â¢s merchandisers will e nsure that the products are displayed in an attractive manner and vital information such as prices and product descriptions are clearly indicated as shown in figure 5. These initiatives will enable customers to shop without seeking assistance. Figure 5: Sales floor Since the company will be using online supply chain management (SCM) and CRM systems, the retailers will be able to access automatic services. The online SCM system will handle activities such as placing orders, sharing transaction information, and making payments. The online CRM system, on the other hand, will be used to handle retailersââ¬â¢ inquiries by providing the information that they need to sell the products. A dedicated accounts manager will be hired to maintain strong relationships with the retailers. The accounts manager will address the needs of the retailers such as ensuring timely processing of orders and delivery of products. Cost of the Relationships Automatic and self-service will require high initia l capital to build the infrastructure. For instance, the company will have to hire an IT company to create and install an effective e-commerce system. Similarly, redesigning the sales floor to facilitate self-service might require a substantial amount of money. However, providing automatic and self-service will be cheap in the long-run since the company will not incur additional costs to deliver them.14 Maintaining relationships with customers through dedicated personnel is likely to be expensive in the short-run when sales are expected to be low. For instance, the company will have to pay the accounts manager on a monthly basis. However, the expected increase in sales in the medium term and long-term will justify the cost of providing personalized services to consumers and retailers. Channels Customers expect to be reached through a variety of media platforms that are easy to access. In addition, they expect the company to distribute its products through distribution channels that are easy to access. Thus, the company will reach the customers in the following ways. To begin with, it will create awareness about its products through advertising. The adverts will be aired on popular TV and radio channels. Moreover, the adverts will be posted on popular magazines and newspapers to reach as many customers as possible. Given the high penetration rate of smartphones and computers in the UAE, the company will also use the social media to create awareness about its products. The company will assist customers to evaluate its value proposition by requesting them to fill out feedback forms that will be available at the retail outlets. Customer complaints forms and suggestion boxes will also be available at the retail outlets to enable customers to convey their concerns to the company. Customers will also have the opportunity to raise their concerns about the products through online communication channels such as email. Consumers will have the opportunity to purchase the products through three channels. These include select supermarkets, the companyââ¬â¢s retail outlets, and retailersââ¬â¢ online stores. The main objective of using the three channels is to increase brand visibility. Specifically, it will enable as many customers as possible to access the products. For instance, large supermarkets can reach customers in nearly all parts of the country. Direct deliveries will be made to customers who will make online purchases. The distribution channels will be integrated both vertically and horizontally. Vertical integration will be achieved after the company establishes its own retail outlets to sell its products directly to the customers. Horizontal integration will be achieved through cooperation with independent retailers to sell to customers. The main advantage of vertical integration is that it will enable the company to have more control over its products. It will enable the companyââ¬â¢s sales executives to use their vast product kno wledge to provide excellent customer service. Vertical integration will also enable the company to eliminate the costs associated with using third party distribution channels. For example, the company will not have to share its revenue with the retailers if it has its own distribution system. As a result, the company will make high profits. Horizontal integration, on the other hand, will enable the company to save the cost of establishing a nationwide distribution system. This will prevent liquid constraints that the company might face in the short-run. Customer Segments Selected Segments The company will focus on creating value for the mass market, which has a huge sales potential due to its large size. Undoubtedly, every person in the UAE is interested in high quality foodstuffs. This means that revenues can be maximized by targeting all customers who are able to afford organic fruits and vegetables. The mass market consists of the individuals who will be purchasing the companyâ⠬â¢s products for personal consumption. The working class and people who are interested in healthy living will be considered as part of the mass market. The company will also serve the niche market to improve its profitability. The niche market consists of the affluent, as well as, fine restaurants and hotels. In the last decade, hotels and restaurants in the UAE have embarked on serving organic foods to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by promoting organic agriculture. The hotel and restaurant market segment is expected to grow in future as economic performance of the country improves. The company intends to take advantage of this growth by producing organic fruits and vegetables for the hotel and restaurant industry. Most Important Segment The mass market will be the most important segment, which the company expects to be its main source of revenue. This perspective is based on the fact that household expenditure on groceries tend to be stable throughout the year. Households are not likely to reduce their expenditure on food unless the economy suffers a shock that has negative effects on consumption in the private sector.15 In this regard, the company expects a steady growth in sales in the mass market. The niche market, on the other hand, is characterized by fluctuations in demand. Sales are high during the summer and holiday seasons when individuals and families prefer to eat in restaurants and hotels rather than their homes. Sales are also high during events such as the Dubai Shopping Festival and trade fairs that attract visitors from other countries. However, sales decline significantly during the winter when families prefer to remain indoors. Nonetheless, hotels and restaurants are important customers because of their ability to make large purchases. They are also willing to pay premium prices to access high quality organic fruits and vegetables. Revenue Streams Customers in the food industry are willing to pay for freshness, high nutri tional value, and high hygiene standards. Currently, customers are only paying for convenience due to the limited supply of organic foods that meet their expectations. Specifically, customers are forced to purchase the foodstuffs that are available in the market irrespective of their quality standards due to lack of substitutes. Since customers are willing to pay for high quality, the company will focus on selling organic fruits and vegetables as its main revenue stream. Nearly, 90% of the companyââ¬â¢s revenue will be attributed to product sales due to limited investment in alternative businesses. The company has strategically chosen to focus on product sales since producing organic fruits and vegetables is its core competence. The company will focus on serving markets in different geographical areas in order to avoid the losses that it would make by serving only one market. Product sales will be based on dynamic pricing. This pricing strategy involves setting prices according t o market conditions. For instance, during high demand seasons the company will increase its prices to ration the limited supply of its products. However, it will reduce the prices during the low demand seasons to attract and retain customers. Dynamic pricing will enable the company to achieve its marketing objectives. For instance, price reductions will facilitate expansion of the market share. Apart from product sales, the company will generate revenues through asset sale and leasing. Idle assets will be sold so that the company can use the proceeds to finance key business processes such as product development and marketing. The assets will be sold through negotiations to enable the company to obtain the best deal. The company will also lease farm equipment and land when they are not in use. The lease fee will improve the companyââ¬â¢s returns on assets. Fixed pricing will be used to lease the assets. In particular, the lessee will pay a predetermined price that will not be chan ged during the lease period. Cost Structure The business model will be cost driven because organic farming is associated with significant fixed and variable costs. The fixed costs will include the salaries of farm workers, consultancy fee, warehousing, and lease fee. The company has to achieve economies of scale in production in order to reduce the negative impact of the fixed costs on its profits. The variable costs include expenditure on farm inputs, water for irrigation, electricity, marketing, and transportation. The most important fixed costs include lease fee, constancy fee, and salaries. The company has to pay lease fee in order to access adequate land for farming and premises to sell its products. Similarly, it has to pay the workers to perform various farming activities such as planting and nurturing the crops. Consultancy fee is also important since the company will require external expertise to improve its productivity. Nearly all variable costs are important. The company has to purchase farm inputs and spend on marketing and transportation in order to deliver its value proposition. Land is the most expensive key resource. The company will spend at least AED 250,000 annually to lease five acres of land in Abu Dhabi. The high lease fee is attributed to the ever-increasing demand for land in the country. Greenhouses are also very expensive. At least AED 78,516 will be required to purchase three greenhouses in the first year. However, expenditure on greenhouses is expected to reduce in the medium-term. This expectation is based on the fact that new greenhouses can be used effectively for up to four years.16 Increased competition among suppliers is likely to reduce the cost of greenhouses in future. Farm inputs are also key resources that are very expensive. The annual expenditure on farm inputs is expected to average AED 45,000. Inadequate food supply in the global market will increase the prices of farm inputs as farmers focus on increasing their prod uctivity. Irrigating the farmland will be the most expensive activity. At least AED 65,000 will be spent annually on irrigation. The high cost is attributed to the water shortage in Abu Dhabi. The Municipality of Abu Dhabi charges high prices to discourage wastage of water. Marketing is another expensive activity that the company will have to invest in to reach its customers. Marketing cost is expected to average AED 32,000 in the first three years. The expected improvement in economic growth will boost business activities, thereby increasing demand for advertising services. This will increase the cost of advertising in the medium-term. In sum, the high fixed and operating costs call for implementation of effective cost reduction measures. Some of the measures that the company will implement to reduce costs include recycling wastewater and using cheap digital marketing platforms such as the social media. Bulk purchases will enable the company to reduce the cost of acquiring farm inp uts. In addition, optimizing the production capacity will help in achieving economies of scale, which in turn will reduce the overall cost of production. The Human Rights Act 2000 Essay Example
The Human Rights Act 2000 Essay Example The Human Rights Act 2000 Essay The Human Rights Act 2000 Essay The Human Rights Act is a protective Bill of Rights. It started life at the end of the Second World War to prevent further atrocities against humanity, from happening. The Convention was drawn up by the Council of Europe to promote peace, equality and basic human rights, and it has evolved over the years. The human rights contained in British law are based within the ââ¬Å"rights and freedomsâ⬠of the European Convention of Human Rights and these include: The right to life, which includes protection and investigation of all suspicious deaths. Freedom from degrading, inhuman treatment or punishment and torture, regardless of the situation. Protection from slavery and forced labour. The right to liberty and freedom, unless you have committed a crime and are a danger to yourself or others. The right to a fair and public trial. Here, you are innocent until proved guilty, will receive no punishment without law and have the right to hear evidence against you. The right to respect the privacy of private life, home life, family life, correspondence. Here, this right may protect you from stalkers, the Media, fans. The freedom to think, worship and believe what you want without repercussions from people who do not share your views, religion or practices. The freedom of expression ââ¬â Should you wish to air your views, you should be able to freely, without repercussions. The right to assemble and protest peacefully. The right to marry and start a family. The prohibition of discrimination- you have the right to enjoy the same right as everyone else, regardless of sex, gender, religion, race, sexuality or age. The right to enjoy your possessions in a peaceful manner, which means that public authorities cannot usually interfere with what you own or how you use them except in certain circumstances. The right of access to education. The right to free elections, they must be free, fair and conducted in private when voting. Not to be subjected to the death penalty. These rights usually fall into three categories, as some of them have exceptions and conditions. These categories are: Absolute Rights ââ¬â These are the rights that the state cannot take away or withhold. For example, the protection from torture or inhuman treatment. Limited Rights ââ¬âAn example of this would be, the right of liberty would not apply if you have been detained, arrested or imprisoned by law. Qualified Rights ââ¬â Are rights that need to be addressed and balanced between the rights of an individual and the needs of society. An example of this would be the right to enjoy your possessions in a peaceful manner i. e. if you found music relaxing but played it at unsociable hours, you could be fined, be bound over, or have your music system confiscated. All public authorities such as local authorities, the Police, NHS and Prison services have a responsibility to consider Human Rights when implementing policies, creating legislation, delivering services and training staff in these matters.
